Vegas and The Mob Book Review

Hollywood has created the mindset that “Vegas” & “The Mob” are synonymous with one another. Few readers will think otherwise. Most likely, everyone has viewed a Mafia movie once or twice. Every decade has boasted movies dedicated to the subject. Actors have based their whole careers playing the stereotypical characters. Al W. Moe’s non-fiction piece may unearth facts, however, that many readers won’t know.

Chronologically, we begin with the Prohibition & move forward.

Names of many ‘celebrities’ mentioned will ring a bell. Al Capone, for one example, is as well-known as the president. Several names may be new to readers, but figure in as well as he does. Links between casinos in other parts of the US are made. Major cities tied in to the Nevada scene. Government agencies & their knowledge of Mafia goings-on are discussed. Reader’s assumptions maybe confirmed or squashed depending on whom they think knew what. In-depth biographical information is given on all the major players. Deaths, residency, and connections are all examined. Readers will find facts, but they’ll be unlike any history textbook they’ve ever read.

Current and the past Nevada residents will enjoy a look into some of the little known state history. Collectors of gambling memorabilia will want to add a copy to their libraries. Students of history should add this book to their collections as well.

Although the lifestyle was glamourized by movies & television, Al W. Moe does a great job of keeping hype out of the equation. He sticks with the facts while still creating an entertaining book. It’s well written & a five star read.

Author Bio:

Al W Moe was born in Cincinnati, Ohio and introduced to the casinos of Nevada at the age of eleven. At the time he had never seen such an amazing array of sights, sounds, and exciting games. Little has changed since that first introduction.

Moe is the author of six books and has written for Gambling Times/Poker Player, Pokernews.com and Casino and Gaming Chips Magazine. His love for casinos and the history of gambling are only exceeded by the thrill he gets learning new casino games and his desire to teach new players how to get the most for their money at the casino.

Education:

Moe attended the University of Nevada at Reno and holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration and Marketing. He especially enjoys the disciplines of probability and statistics.

From Al W Moe:

Casinos and the games they offer have occupied my thinking most of my life. The early casino owners, especially when it involved the Mob in Las Vegas are a fascinating subject. It is amazing the Mob was able to skim the profits of clubs in Nevada for over 40 years. The story of how they did it is even more amazing!
