Cocaine Masks explores the dynamics of power between ordinary hard working Colombians and the massive Colombian drug cartels, also showing the desperate situation of many of the Colombian poor.

Ms. Calvo’s novel cleverly accomplishes this by portraying the depth of several people from a different strata of Colombian society: a high level-member of a wealthy Cartel, a poor Cartagean store owner and his son, who are forced to launder money for that Cartel, at personal risks and a young woman who escapes from poverty by marrying into the Cartel hierarchy.
