Hulu Plus Q&A

1.What does this price change mean for Hulu and their business model?

The very first thing that should be pointed out is that Hulu Plus has been slowly but surely cutting the number of commercials in each show down to one every five minutes, which is a great way to keep viewers around for the entire run time of your program. This also cuts down on the number of episodes that have to be run which needs fewer advertisers and leads to a more lucrative deal for Hulu as well.

2.What kind of impact would this price cut have on HULU’s subscribers?

With such a high price point, it is no surprise that people are still hesitant to make the full jump into online streaming without cable. This price cut not only makes Hulu more attractive to people, but it also opens up a lot to new customers that had no interest due to the high monthly cost. With this price point and adding in more commercials, there is absolutely zero reason why someone wouldn’t choose this over paying $100+ for cable each month.

3.What are the main reasons why users would choose Hulu over Netflix?

While people tend to think of these two companies as competitors, they really aren’t all that similar and offer different perks to their customers. The most attractive thing about Hulu is definitely the current TV shows that you can watch on it at no additional charge. It’s hard not to throw your money at Hulu once you get used to being able to watch Seinfeld whenever and wherever you want. Netflix on the other hand is a little more niche in that it only shows movies and not current TV episodes. The biggest reason why people choose Netflix over Hulu though is because of the price point, with Netflix costing about $7-8 a month compared to Hulu’s $9.99.

4.What are the main advantages of Netflix over Hulu Plus?

While it is true that Netflix doesn’t offer current TV shows like Hulu does, they also do not have any commercials and don’t force you into having to sit through them every five minutes either. In addition, Netflix has a long list of exclusive titles that Hulu simply will never be able to get their hands on. It’s also worth noting that Netflix is available in more countries than Hulu is, which makes it very attractive for anyone who travels abroad or tries to hit up a foreign Netflix region.

5.How do you think this price cut effects the future of Hulu?

This is clearly a move by Hulu to try and increase their number of subscribers, especially since it’s the biggest price cut in the company’s history. Customers are more likely to buy into subscription services when they’re offered at less than half of what they were previously being charged. This also opens up a new market for all those people who were previously too hesitant to make the jump into online streaming. According to their recent earnings call, Hulu has about 9 million subscribers right now and it will definitely be interesting to see how this big drop in price affects that number as time goes on.

6.Will the other providers follow suit and throw a bunch of more content at us?

Recently, there has been a trend among cable providers, where they offer you all of their content on-demand via the Internet. Now that Hulu is offering a more than reasonable deal for its customers to use as little or much as they want, it’s unclear if other companies will try and hop onto this bandwagon now that Hulu has shown us all how profitable it can be.

7.Which of the TV shows would you watch from Hulu?

From my perspective, there are two titles that really stand out as must watches on Hulu Plus. The first is definitely Seinfeld which is always a good time and has so many episodes now that you probably won’t ever be able to catch up. The second is How I Met Your Mother, which is one of the more recent series to be added and it really is a show that’s hard to beat.

8.If you were given free reign over what TV shows Hulu Plus should buy, which ones would you choose?

It’s worth noting that Hulu already has an incredible selection of titles available for their customers to enjoy. There are so many shows available on there that I would never have time to get through them all with a Hulu Plus subscription. This is mainly because of the fact that they have so many great shows from the 90s and before, which were really the best years for television in my opinion.

9.What was your favorite movie on Hulu?

The one movie on Hulu that really stands out to me is The American President. It’s a classic romantic comedy with Michael Douglas and Annette Bening, and it has so much going for it in terms of plot and character development. You could never see this movie being put out by any big name studios today, but that doesn’t change the fact that it’s an excellent film and one of my personal favorites.

10.What is your favorite TV show on Hulu?

If I had to name my absolute favorite TV show to watch on Hulu Plus, there would be no other choice than It’s Always Sunny In Philadelphia which can be found on Netflix as well. It’s a show that is absolutely hilarious and I can’t believe it has taken me this long to get around to watching it. It’s an extremely wacky show with one of the most dysfunctional group of friends you could ever imagine.
