Rape accused army jawan commits suicide in Karbi Anglong

One of the Indian army jawans accused of rape committed suicide in Assam’s Karbi Anglong district on Monday evening.

The jawan was identified as Satyabir Dara, an 8th Jat regiment jawan from Haryana. He was the prime accused in the recent rape of three women. Dara shot himself with his service rifle in Diphu and was taken to a local hospital. A doctor declared him dead upon arrival.

After the rapes, a case was registered at Dokmoka police station against Dara and other jawans for the alleged rape of a women and two girls in the Parkopahar area. They were arrested after a search operation conducted by security forces.

The rape incident led to widespread protests on April 10, in which 11 people, including nine security personnel, were injured by stone pelting and subsequent police firing.

Several organizations and civilians in Karbi Anglong protested the rape incident and demanded stern action against the accused.

A number of organizations called for a 24 hour Karbi Anglong district bandh protest against the rapes.
