Hardcore GNLA Militant Killed in Assam-Meghalaya Border Encounter

A hardcore cadre of Garo militant group Garo National Liberation Army (GNLA) was killed in a gun battle with security forces in Assam’s Goalpara district along the Meghalaya border on Sunday, officials said.

Acting on a tip-off, a joint team of army and police had launched search operation at Kachisagra area in the district along the Assam-Meghalaya border area.

“Based on an intelligence report, we had launched the search operation where a militant group was hiding,” a top police official said.

“When the troops reached the area, the militants started firing on security personnel and forcing them to exchange bullets,” the police official said.

A hardcore militant was killed at the location and two others of the group managed to flee from the encounter area.

The dead militant was identified as Khowak Marak.

The Garo militant group is active in the bordering areas of Assam. At least another seven of their cadre have been killed this year.
