Businessman Shot Dead, Two Girls Killed in Lightning

One businessman was shot dead by unidentified men in Assam’s Dhubri district on Sunday morning, police said.

According to report, a businessman named Jhumurmul Jain was shot dead by gunmen after the businessman refused to give the demanded money.

“The incident took place at Chowk Bazar area in Dhubri town on Sunday morning when two gunmen shot Jhumurmul in a short range, who came on a bike,” a police official said.

Later police arrested the suspect who was identified as Md Islam and recovered one pistol in his possession. The other supsect has managed to escape.

The injured businessman was rushed to the Dhubri civil hospital, but the doctor declared him dead.

A police sources said militants of anti-talk faction group of National Democratic Front of Bodoland (NDFB) and United Liberation Front of Asom (ULFA) had sent extortion letters to few businessmen in the district. Some local unemployed youths were reportedly used in their money collection operations.

In other news, two girls were killed as lightning struck Ashabam tea estate near Naharkatia in Dibrugarh district on Saturday evening, police said on Sunday.

The female victims were identified as Shanti Sarma and Uma Orang.
