Assam Congress Leader Faces Attempted Rape Charges

A Congress leader of Assam was nabbed by police on Thursday after he was allegedly attempting to rape a woman and was beaten up by villagers in Assam’s Chirang district.

The incident took place at Salbari area in the district on Wednesday night when Bikram Singh Brahma, a top congress leader of Bodoland Territorial Areas Districts (BTAD) allegedly attempted to rape a woman and was caught by the husband of the victim.

Later the leader was beaten up by villagers and handed over to the police.

The victims husband filed a complaint against the politician who allegedly attempted to rape his wife.

“He would be arrested soon and police are waiting to register a case,” a top police official said.

The Congress leader Brahma is the chief co-ordinator of BTAD and he was contested as a Congress candidate in the Assam assembly polls in 2011 from Chapaguri constituency.

Various social organizations and political parties demanded stern action against the accused Congress leader.
