Army Officer, 2 Cops Among 7 Killed in Kashmir Gunfight


Srinagar, Sep 27: An army officer, two policemen and four militants have been killed in the ongoing gunfight in Indian administered Kashmir.

A police officer said the encounter broke out at the Awathkul forest area of Kralipora in North Kashmir yesterday afternoon after the militants in the area fired from automatic weapons towards a joint search party of army and policemen.

“The fire was returned by the troops, triggering an encounter. The intermittent exchange of fire between the two sides was going on,” he said. So far an Army Lieutenant, two policemen personnel and four militants were killed. “Two army men were also injured in the firefight.”

He also said additional army and policemen have been rushed to the area to flush out the militants hiding there.

The officials said they don’t know the exact number of militants holed-up in the area. “The way they are firing on the search party, it seems more than two militants are still present in the area.”
