6 Die in Assam Flood

At least six people including a child were killed in the first wave of flooding in Assam, officials said on Tuesday.

Assam Government officials said more than 60 thousand families in 13 of the 27 districts were affected by the flood.

In Barpeta district, at least four people including a child were killed in the flood at Bhella area on Monday.

“Four members of a family died when they accidentally fell into a deep pond submerged by floodwaters,” a Barpeta district official said.

The victims were identified as Rita Begum, Halida Begum, Rahima Begum and her child Madhan Begum.

Meanwhile, the body of a class VI student, Jyoti Kalita was recovered on Monday in Barpeta district. She had been washed away by the flood.

On the 17th of June, a 9 year old girl, Manisha Das died in the Nagaon area of the district when she was washed away by the flood.

More than 100 villages in the district were submerged by floodwaters.

The flood situation remains grim in Nalbari, Barpeta, Chirang, Morigaon, Golaghat districts and a few areas in the Barak valley.

There are flood damaged crops in more than thousand hectares of farm land across the state.

In Kaziranga National Park, floodwaters submerged more than 35 percent of the park area.
