4 Maoist Killed, One Security Personnel Injured in Assam Encounter

Guwahati, May 9: Four suspected maoists were killed and an Assam police constable critically injured in an encounter with security forces in Assam’s Tinsukia district on Wednesday, police said.

The encounter took place at Deopani Borgara village under the Sadia police station in Tinsukia district around 10:45am on Wednesday.

“Acting on a tip-off, ateam of Assam police launched a search operation at the area, where a maoist took shelter,” said a police official.

“When security forces reached the place, the maoist group opened fire and bullets were exchenged,” police said.

During the encounter four maoist rebels were killed on the spot and a Second APBN constable Achyut Das was injured. The injured police constable rushed to Tinsukia civil hospital.

Security forces recovered three AK series rifle in possession of the slain militants.

Top Assam police and army officials rushed to the area and launched a search operation.

Meanwhile, a top police official claimed that an area commander of the maoist rebel Sanjeev Borah was also killed in the encounter.

Recently, the Union Home Minister P Chidambaram and the Assam Chief Minister Tarun Gogoi commented that the maoist rebels had set up bases in Assam and some local organisations had helped the maoists for their organisational set up.
