100 Students Become Ill After Taking Iron Tablets in Assam

At least 100 students of three government schools in Assam’s Sonitpur and Darrang district became ill after consuming iron tablets given to them on Wednesday, officials said.

The first incident took place at Hawajan High School near Gohpur in Sonitpur district, 52 students became ill after consuming the iron tablets.

The students were rushed to Gohpur civil hospital where thier condition is reported to be stable.

After the incident, local people, parents of the students gathered outside the school and launched a protest against the distribution of sub-standard iron pills to the students.

Meanwhile, the same incident was reported at Dubia, the South Kalabari area in the district and Sipajhar area in Darrang district, where over 50 students became ill after taking iron pills and they were admitted to the nearest hospitals.

However, former Assam Education Minister Ripun Bora and Gohpur MLA Manika Bora protest against the incident and demanded investigations on the incident.
