In her remarks in New York on the Adoption of the General Assembly Resolution on Ukraine, US Permanent Representative to UN Samantha Power said countries from every corner of the world made clear their support for Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty, their support for international law, and for the foundational norms that underpin the United Nations and international cooperation in the 21st century.
“The world has made clear that the international community will not accept Russia’s illegal annexation of Crimea.” – Ms. Power
UN resolution deplores actions that undermine’s territorial integrity
Ms. Power underlined that the resolution adopted by the General Assembly is a clear call from the international community for all states to refrain from actions that undermine Ukraine’s national unity and territorial integrity.
In addition, the resolution also stresses the importance of maintaining an inclusive political dialogue in Ukraine that reflects the diversity of its society.
The US welcomes the support from member states in every region who have joined together in condemning an act that blatantly undermines the UN Charter.
Ms. Power noted that the vote shows the strong global conviction, grounded in international law, that nations and peoples have the right to chart their own course free from external influences or fear of invasion.
Who is backing Russia on its claims towards Crimea?
Ms. Power stressed that in the face of international isolation, only a handful of states joined with Russia in defending its violation of Ukrainian sovereignty and territorial integrity.
She pointed out that many of these votes came from regimes that, like Russia, fear free expression and peaceful assembly.
Ms. Power stressed that despite significant misinformation spread by Russia, the truth of what Russia has done in Crimea has penetrated to all the regions of the world.
Call for dialogue
According to Ms. Power, the United States continues to encourage a resolution to this crisis through direct dialogue between Russia and Ukraine as supported by the international community.
In addition, Ms. Power said Ukraine needs a resolution that will ensure international monitors to ensure the rights of all Ukrainians are protected including vulnerable minorities in occupied Crimea.
“The United States stands with the people of Ukraine and will continue to support them as they build a democratic, stable and prosperous future.” – Ms. Power
US does not recognized annexation of Crimea to Russia
Denouncing the referendum in Crimea, the United States of America slammed the annexation of Crimea to Russia.
Media reports say, majority of citizens in Crimea voted for a breakaway and will join Russia as the referendum push through this week.
The United States rejects Russia’s military intervention and land grab in Crimea.
US asserts that Russia’s actions violate the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, Russia’s own binding agreements, international law, the expressed will of most members of this Council, and the letter and spirit of the United Nations Charter.
legal status of Crimea has not changed
Amid the turnout of election that majority of Crimeans voted to join Russia, the United States asserted that the legal status of Crimea has not changed and rejects military movement in Crimea.
Russia’s intervention in Ukraine cannot be justified.
In addition, the Security Council accurately described the Crimean separatist referendum as invalid, only a single hand rose in opposition.
Annexation of Crimea to Russia strongly denounced by US and EU
Last week, the United States of America expressed strong opposition after Crimea voted to split from Ukraine and be absorbed by Russia.
The citizens of Crimea overwhelmingly supported a referendum to secede from Ukraine and join Russia.
Prior to the holding of the referendum, United States and its allies have dubbed the referendum as unconstitutional and illegal.
The US government asserted that referendum on Crimea must be conducted within the bounds of Ukrainian law and the United States joins with others in calling for its suspension.
The US also called on the Russian Federation to halt its military intervention and refrain from any further actions in support of this illegitimate and destabilizing effort.
Amid US disapproval, the voting continued. The referendum offered voters the choice of joining Russia or remaining in Ukraine with greater independence.
Why Russia is holding on Crimea
Crimea is home to many ethnic Russians and strategically important to Russia. Russia’s Black Sea Fleet is based in Crimea providing Russia’s navy access to the Mediterranean Sea.
The Kiev government, the Obama administration and its allies claimed the referendum is unconstitutional. They said the referendum is not nationwide and violates international agreements.
With the self-determination of Crimea made possible, there is an apprehension that it would set an example for other breakaway regions around the world.
