Omar Faruk Osman, recently elected Secretary General of National Union of Somali Journalists (NUSOJ) and executive committee member of the International Federation of Journalists (IFJ), was praised in Somalia at welcome ceremonies for his great achievement.

On Friday 10th of June, the International Federation of Journalists held its 29th world congress in the French city of Angers. Voting for the election of officers took place at this congress.

Mr. Osman received 132 votes to secure the win in the first round of voting. He was elected to the powerful 21-member executive committee of the International Federation of Journalists.

The women’s Media Development Umbrella in Somalia (WOMDU) sent their felicitations and a message of appreciation to Mr Osman after his election to the world journalists’ top governing body.

“Mr. Osman has long been fighting for the rights of journalists both in this troubled nation of Somalia and in entire Africa continent. His election to IFJ executive board would mean that he will broaden his efforts to lobby for journalists’ rights throughout the world and this is another big step forward,” Sahro Abdullahi Yusuf said in a statement issued here in Mogadishu on Wednesday. Sahro Abdullahi Yusuf is the chairwoman of the WOMDU executive committee.

“The election of Mr. Osman to the global journalists’ governing body leadership is a huge success for journalists in Somalia where he has been an iconic media rights campaigner for years.” – WOMDU deputy chairwoman, Malyun Sheik Haider.
