Citizens of Benin Celebrate Their Independence Day

The citizens of Benin today celebrated their 51st anniversary of independence.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Benin on their National Day.

“The United States and Benin enjoy a strong relationship based on a shared commitment to democracy, peace, and rule of law.” -Ms. Clinton

She commended Benin as a shining example of a country that is dedicated to preserving its democratic traditions and encouraging these values in the region.

Ms. Clinton highlighted that Benin’s achievements as a peaceful, democratic country with a strong commitment to human rights and education will improve the quality of life for all Beninese people now and in the years to come.

“As you celebrate your National Day with family and friends, know that the United States stands with you. We deeply value this relationship and will continue to look for ways to work together in the years to come.” -Ms. Clinton
