Central Somalia Promotes Football

Despite lack of proper football facilities, equipment and financial problems football activities in the central Somali region of Galgadud are recovering from years of conflicts.

On Thursday, a four-week long football tournament was concluded at an open ground in the moderate-Islamist administered town of Guri-El where eight teams from the town and surrounding villages competed in football tournament organized by the region’s sub football association with the assistance from Somali Football federation.

A local football fanatic and the head of International committee of the Red Cross office in the region Mohamed Elmi Damdamle also helped the smooth going of the tournament and financed the closing ceremony on Thursday afternoon.

Mr. Damdamle himself was the captain of the winning team Iftin. In the hotly-contested final match, Damdamle’s team defeated its waberi rivals by 4-2 in the presence of the regional football association president Abdirashid Aden Roble and officials from the moderate Islamist administration in the central Galgadud region.

“I am very grateful to Somali Football Federation for its great assistance in the revival of football activities in the region-Football is now active here and we hope to step into a higher development in the coming years,” the regional football association president Abdirashid Aden Roble said.

“Every region is built by its people, so I am calling on the football-loving people from this region every where in the world to help the promotion of football here-We are praising the humanitarian worker and football-lover Mohamed Elmi Damdamle for his offer and we call on business community in the region to have their role,” the regional football association boss noted.

Iftin team boys celebrate

Somali Football Federation Secretary General Abdi Qani Said Arab for his part said that Somali FA is encouraging in the sector of regional football development.

“We are committed to developing football from edge to edge in Somalia and we congratulate the Galgadud regional football authorities on the good job they are doing-we say them go ahead and we are always with you in all your activities,” the secretary General said at the closing ceremony in a via phone address.
