CGN Appreciation Month: Recognizing The Needs of Military Children

First, there has been the Fourth of July/Independence Day, which concedes Big Willie Smith Weekend.

Now, Colorado Springs Mayor Lionel Rivera has declared July Christian Grandparenting Network Appreciation Month to honor of the CGN for their dedication to the military children of Colorado Springs.

CGN started to provide this desire when they began their first Military Kids GrandCamp (MKGC) mid-last month: a week-long residence camp in Florissant. It was created for grandparents and grandchildren with parents that have been called to service in either Iraq or other parts of the world.

“The Christian Grandparenting Network”, said Executive Director Calvin Harper, “has spent the last six years developing programs catered to building relationships between grandparent and grandchild. This year, with numbers rising of children whose parents are continuing to serve in Iraq we saw the great need to focus on military children and connect them to their grandparents for a support system.

“I think it takes more than city planning to support children as they face transition, relocation and the absence of a parent or two. CGN has recognized the needs of military children and we’re striving to ease the pain they face, show them love, and give them hope. But we can’t do it alone.”
