Acceptance of Same-sex Sexual Behavior on the Rise in US

Same-sex Sexual Behavior Becoming a Trend?

Sexual relations between two adults of the same sex may not be wrong at all as study revealed that acceptance of same-sex sexual behavior is on the rise in the United States of America.

According to a study conducted by researchers from Florida Atlantic University, San Diego State University and Widener University, number of couples who engaged same-sex sexual experience has doubled in 2014 compared three decades ago. Also, acceptance of same-sex sexual experience has quadrupled. This data was based on a study examining a nationally representative survey of 33,728 American adults from 1973 to 2014.

These key outcomes pave the way to conclusion that the cultural changes of the last few decades are not only cited on the simple tolerance of gay, lesbian, and bisexual individuals. Now, acceptance of same-sex sexuality and the freedom to engage in same-sex sexuality is not something new rather it is becoming part of the norm.

The study reveals that acceptance of sexual relations between two adults of the same sex increased to a near majority in 2014 at 49 percent. Among 18 to 29 year olds, acceptance surged from 15 percent in 1990 to 63 percent in 2014.

Interestingly, the study further suggests that acceptance of sexual relations of the same sex varies with the different generations as well.

Ryne Sherman, Ph.D., co-author of the study said “Millennials are markedly more accepting of same-sex behavior than GenX’ers were at the same age – but then, so are most adults.”

Increase in Same-Sex Sexual Experience

The study reveals that the percentage of men who have had sex with at least one man doubled from 4.5 percent to 8.2 percent, while the percentage of women who have had sex with at least one woman increased from 3.6 percent to 8.7 percent. With regards to bisexual behavior, the percentage of adults who have had both male and female partners rose from 3.1 percent to 7.7 percent.

Men and women engaged in gay and lesbian sexual experience. Among 18 to 29 year olds in the 2010s or the Millenials, 7.5 percent of men have had a gay sexual experience, and 12.2 percent of women have had a lesbian sexual experience.LGBT

The study showed that the increases in same-sex experiences were dominant among whites and in the South and Midwest.

About the Study

The study was published in the current issue of the journal Archives of Sexual Behavior. The researchers used data from the General Social Survey (GSS), a nationally representative survey of U.S. adults conducted since 1972. Questions in the survey on acceptance of same-sex sexual behavior have been asked since 1973, and those on sexual partners have been asked since 1989.
