Advice to Bands seeking to make it in the music industry by Bruce Edwin, talent and band manager of Starpower Management:
, Copyright all of your music and lyrics, separately and together.
, Register all of your music with ASCAP or BMI.
, Try to avoid sharing music with co writers if possible until you are signed, it makes things more complicated for labels and managers.
, Don't send bulk emails to agents, managers or labels, email them or write them individually and address the person by name.
, Get someone to write your query letter for you if you do not know how to write a professional letter. Be polite and ask the person what you want- don't order.
, See other bands that are more successful than you and make friends. Do favors for those who can help you so that you may get help in return.
, Get someone to manage your social media, and build it up big. You Tube is a must, with big viewership for your video or videos.
, Play out live often. Never think you are too good to play a hole in the wall to few people. Every positive action builds the momentum.
, Stay clean- avoid drugs and don't booze it up too much.
, Have integrity. Do what you say you are going to do. Be one time and don't screw people over.
, Use performance contracts - simple ones until you get a manager to handle this for you.
, Unless you are playing for free, always require half the money up front, and the other half upon completion of your gig.
, Treat your fans like gold- they are why you will get to do what you do for a living.
, Don't diss other artists. If you don't like em', just ignore them but don't insult others. It will not help your career.
, Forget what you think the market wants and play what you feel in your heart and soul, with passion.
