US Postal Service To Discontinue Saturday Letter Deliveries

By

A New Delivery Schedule

The United States Postal Service announced plans today to transition to a new delivery schedule during the week of Aug. 5, 2013 that includes packages, mail-order medicine, and express mail Monday through Saturday, and mail (letters, bills, sales ads) delivery Monday through Friday.

The Postal Service expects to generate cost savings of approximately $2 billion annually, once the plan is fully implemented compared to a loss of $16 billion the Postal Service reported for 2012.

Change to Impact 22,500 Jobs

The change will impact 22,500 jobs, Patrick Donahoe, postmaster general and CEO of the postal service said, which he plans to achieve without resorting to layoffs. Rather, he would offer buy outs, eliminate overtime, and rely more on the part time workforce. There will be no changes to post offices that are currently open on Saturday and mail will continue to be delivered to PO boxes.
