Is Facebook Making You Miserable and Depressed?

By   get stories by email

"Witnessing friends' vacations, love lives and work successes on Facebook can cause envy and trigger feelings of misery and loneliness, according to German researchers.

A study conducted jointly by two German universities found rampant envy on Facebook, the world's largest social network that now has over one billion users and has produced an unprecedented platform for social comparison.

The researchers found that one in three people felt worse after visiting the site and more dissatisfied with their lives, while people who browsed without contributing were affected the most." - Reuters

It's not unusual for a job seeker to exaggerate his accomplishments on his resume, so why do we accept at face value a friend's Facebook bio?

Out of curiosity and boredom I've looked up a few old friends on Facebook, and it seems that every last one of them is in a senior management position, married to a former beauty queen, and their children attend prestigious universities.

If I believed that my old friends were telling the truth, I'd be pretty bummed out. But judging by their prior drug use, and their work habits, my guess is that in their senior management positions they enjoy the fringe benefit of eating all the fries they want for free.

I don't know anybody on Facebook who doesn't lie or at the very least stretch the truth. If it will make you feel better, exaggerate your accomplishments and Photoshop the image of your wife or girlfriend.

One of my old buddies wrote on his Facebook page: I'm a real go-getter, I am the leader of my bowling team, I teach Sunday School, and I belong to a book discussion club. Really homes, then why do you only have a dozen friends on Facebook?

Dude, don't feel depressed after visiting Facebook, your friends are also needy and hopeless, but they are excellent liars.
