Sacred Heart University Students Now Can Enroll in Air Force ROTC Program

Sacred Heart University students now have the option to participate in the Air Force Reserved Officers' Training Corp (ROTC) program. As part of a crosstown agreement with Yale University in New Haven, SHU ROTC students can take aerospace study courses, taught by Air Force personnel, at Yale. They also take a mandatory military history course, taught by a Yale professor, side-by-side with Yale students.

"Technically, they can tell people they are going to Yale," said Dr. Gary Rose, SHU's faculty liaison for the ROTC program, adding that the SHU students enrolled in the program have privileges to use Yale's Sterling Memorial Library and recreational facilities.

Rose noted that in addition to having the credits that come with the ROTC courses paid for, students in the program can apply for a more comprehensive Air Force ROTC scholarship to help with their Sacred Heart tuition. In addition, prospective students who have been accepted into the Air Force scholarship program can now choose to come to Sacred Heart.

The ROTC program has been going well so far for SHU participant Lee-Anna Sealey-Cavitt. "I'm looking forward to a promising and bright future with the program," she said.

"We are excited about this program and grateful that Yale has asked us to participate," Rose said. "There are many tracks and additional opportunities that can come from this program; students don't have to become a fighter pilot! Our goal is to provide our students with as many opportunities and options as we can."
