Survey Reveals That "Prioritizing Projects" and "Maintenance" Are Among the Top Challenges for Government IT Organizations

Results Released Today by Survey Sponsors Government Technology Magazine and Innotas, Provider of IT Portfolio Management and IT Governance Solutions

"Cutting costs" (59%) and "keeping support and maintenance costs down" (49%) were cited as some of the biggest challenges facing government IT organizations today, according to a recent study conducted by Government Technology magazine and Innotas, a leading provider of Cloud-based IT Governance and Project Portfolio Management solutions (PPM). Other top challenges for government IT organizations include managing too many problems (49%), support for new technology/enabling innovation (52%) and prioritizing projects (37%).

Government agencies have reported significant gains in IT management since the survey was first conducted in 2009, according to the Government Technology/Innotas survey of IT and policy decision-makers:

  • 50% did not have a Project Management Office (PMO) in place in 2009 and 54% now have a PMO in place. And, 40% have had a PMO in place for more than a year.
  • Few IT organizations had real-time dashboards in place in 2009, while 22% today use real-time dashboards to report operational activity and status updates to agencies.
  • 66% did not have an IT governance/project portfolio management (PPM) tool in place in 2009, while today only 43% report not having a PPM solution and 22% report using PPM solutions.

"It is encouraging to see a jump in Project Management Offices in government agencies, helping them better manage their resources in a centralized way," said Kevin Kern, CEO of Innotas. "PPM solutions, such as our solution, are also being more widely adopted and enabling many state and local government IT organizations to become more productive and better align IT with their strategic focus."

In Innotas' work with government agencies, and other industries, implementing a hosted PPM solution has improved productivity by eliminating about 50% of an IT organization's previous "workarounds" that end-users had relied on to deal with its organization's Legacy computer system's shortcomings.

Kern added, "Cloud-based IT management solutions raise the bar by shifting the focus of IT implementation away from simply installing new technology to re-engineering business processes and facilitating change management."
