Prominent human rights activists, civil society members and journalists demanded security from Nepal Prime Minister, Dr. Baburam Bhattarai, on February 5.
Human right activist and member of civil society and Chairperson of Informal Sector Service Centre (INSEC) Subodh Raj Pyakurel, former deputy General Secretary of United Nations Kul Chandra Gautam and journalist Kanak Mani Dixit, in a joint letter, have demanded security from the PM.
The UCPN-M affiliated monthly magazine, Lalrakshyak (Volume IV, Issue 5, Jan 28 to Feb 27) published a cover photo and an article that claimed INSEC Chairperson Pyakurel, UN former Secretary General Gautam and journalist Dixit are enemies of the people. All three have sought security from the government.

"If we are attacked, top leaders of UCPN-M will be responsible for it. We clarify that they cannot ignore simply saying that it was against party policy in the case that we were attacked," the latter reads.
"We will not step back from expressing our independent views, despite the allegations of the magazine. It is a direct attempt of the party to instigate its cadres. The leadership of UCPN-M should understand it," the letter said.
"We know that the objectionable coverage of the magazine has made an attempt to terrify journalists, human rights activists, intellectuals and independent citizens," the letter said, adding, "Such attempt will end in vain."
Dr. Bhattarai, the maoist leader, is now Prime Minister of the entire Nepali nation and people. The writers say he should respond to the article published in the magazine. They demand action be taken against the magazine and the editor who published the cover photo and the related article, which they feel could encourage maoist violence against them.
