PACE Working Paper Highlights Strengths of I CAN Learn® Program

Leading the pack of all-inclusive programs is the I CAN Learn® Program, about which Saultz states that the "distinguishing feature of this program is that is has proven statistical results through randomly controlled trials (RCTs)." He notes that both these studies have met the US Department of Education's What Works Clearinghouse's peer-review standards for having "Positive Effects" (the highest rating possible). Additional benefits of the program, according to the author, are "its very detailed materials, its tutor component, and its data system." These accolades complement the findings from another recent study by researchers from Princeton University, which concluded that this intervention can make every math teacher "highly effective" by teaching one and a half years' worth of algebra in one year, is proven to close the achievement gap by almost a third on the NAEP, and is a "cost-effective" math solution as well.

Already used in 45 states and over 400 schools nationwide, the I CAN Learn® Program is backed by over 17 years of scientifically based research proving its success at raising students' high-stakes test scores.

Dr. Geoffrey Borman of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, a Principal Standing Panel Member of the Education Systems and Broad Reform Research Review Panel of the U.S. Department of Education, IES, is preparing to conduct a Million Student Study on the efficacy of this program. To encourage participation, grants are now available for qualifying schools and districts. These grants cover up to one-half the cost to participate in this historic 3-year study.
