'SoCal Connected' Looks at LA New School Lunch Plans
Episode airs February 3 at 9:00 PM.
This week, SoCal Connected looks at the Los Angeles Unified School District's controversial new school lunch plan in which the usual pizza, burgers and fries, have been replaced by vegetables and fruit.
SoCal Connected's Jennifer London reports on the "food fight" in which critics argue the new food is so unpopular, that much of it remains uneaten... school officials defend the new plan, which they say is growing in popularity. They also claim the federal guidelines - like a minimum amount of food that must be served -are contributing to the waste.
Just last week, First Lady Michelle Obama endorsed tougher federal guidelines, stressing healthy food.
"BURGER BINGE"
Continuing the theme of healthy and unhealthy food, correspondent Brian Rooney looks at fast food. One quarter of all Americans go to a fast food restaurant every day, contributing to the $140 billion a year business. Who's to blame - the fast food restaurants that heavily advertise their high calorie meals...or the individuals who go there?
"FILLING A NEED"
Finally, SoCal Connected's Judy Muller looks at a program that offers free dental and eye care needs for some of the most underserved residents of LA. It's not unusual for thousands of people to wait on line for the care.
SoCal Connected recently moved to 9:00 PM Fridays, following Moyers and Company, Bill Moyer's new hour discussion show at 8:00 p.m.
