TUESDAY, JANUARY 31: ZANE GREY

Profile America -- Tuesday, January 31st. One of the most successful authors about the West was born in Ohio on this date in 1872 -- Zane Grey. He played some professional baseball and became a dentist, but a trip to the West changed his life. Concentrating on writing, he wrote more than 90 books, mostly about an idealized Old West. His most popular novel was "Riders of the Purple Sage," and more than 110 movies were made from his stories. Zane Grey was also was an avid fisherman, going to sea up to 300 days a year. He held many deep sea fishing records, especially in the waters off New Zealand and Australia. While usually not on such a grandiose scale, well over 8 million Americans enjoy salt water fishing each year. Profile America is in its 15th year as a public service of the U.S. Census Bureau.
