Matthew Monk Named New Academic Dean at Vermont College of Fine Arts

MONTPELIER, Vt., Jan. 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Vermont College of Fine Arts (VCFA), a national center for graduate education in the fine arts, announced today that Matthew Monk, Professor of Graphic Design at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD), has been named Academic Dean beginning July 1, 2012.

VCFA is the first college in the country devoted entirely to the low-residency model of graduate arts education, offering Masters of Fine Arts degrees in Graphic Design, Music Composition, Visual Art, Writing, and Writing for Children & Young Adults.

As Chief Academic Officer of the College, Monk will oversee all academic affairs.

"Matthew Monk emerged from a very competitive national field," said Thomas Christopher Greene, president of VCFA. "He has the demonstrated ability to be precisely the kind of academic leader VCFA needs to fulfill its mission as a national center for education in the arts."

Monk replaces Dean Gary Moore, who was recently named Dean Emeritus by the VCFA Board of Trustees.

Monk is the founding chair of VCFA's MFA in Graphic Design program. He is most recently Professor of Graphic Design and Foundation Studies at RISD, where he has taught since 1993.

Monk holds an undergraduate degree in graphic design from North Carolina State University, an MFA in Graphic Design from RISD, and a certificate from the Sheridan Center for Teaching and Learning at Brown University.

In addition to his teaching, Monk has maintained a vibrant studio practice as a designer. His clients include Yale University Press, Harvard University Graduate School of Design, the National Gallery of Art, and Deutsche Architektur-Museum of Frankfurt, Germany. His work has won many of the most prestigious awards in the field. Monk is also an accomplished visual artist whose paintings have been widely exhibited.
