People has reported that former teen idol Kristy McNichol has come out as a lesbian, and that she has been in a relationship with partner Martie Allen for the past two decades.
According to publicist Jeff Ballard, the purpose for Kristy coming out is on behalf of kids being bullied because of their sexuality.
"She hopes that coming out can help kids who need support" he continued. "She would like to help others who feel different."
Kristy is best known to television viewers as Buddy on the acclaimed ABC drama Family (1976-1980): earning her two Emmys for Best Supporting Actress in a Drama. She jumped to the big screen in 1980's Little Darlings with Tatum O'Neal, Matt Dillon, and a pre-Sex and the City Cynthia Nixon. Kristy returned to the small screen in 1988 as Barbara Weston on NBC's Empty Nest, but left the show after four years when she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder and has retired from acting.
"She is very happy and healthy... and she enjoys living a very private life" Ballard said.
