Former DEA Agent's Article Claims Congressman Issa's View is Blurred

Former DEA Agent and Author of "The Infiltrator: My Secret Life Inside the Dirty Banks Behind Pablo Escobar's Medellin Cartel" writes an Op-Ed column challenging Congressmen Darrell Issa's view on undercover money laundering operations by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).

Recently Congressman Issa compared the DEA's undercover money laundering operations to the failed "Fast and Furious" debacle that put 2000 weapons in the hands of criminals. However Robert Mazur disagrees.

"Undercover money laundering operations by the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) and other agencies have been one of the most important and effective tools used by law enforcement to prosecute the hierarchy of the underworld" says Mazur in the article.

With the growing illegal drug trade generating almost $400 billion dollars a year, this poses a national threat to America, because most of these drug deals involve US currency and its laundered through our banking system.

According toan October 2011 report released by the United Nation's Office of Drugs and Crime, it estimates that in North America cocaine sales alone generate roughly $35 billion. Factor in other drugs, and at least $65 billion are being made from the sale of illegal drugs in the U.S. each year. At the same time, despite law enforcement's valiant efforts, less than $1 billion in drug proceeds are seized in the U.S. per year. That means that law enforcement never even sees 99 percent of cartels' revenue.

Mazur spent years infiltrating the banks behind Pablo Escobar's feared Medellin Cartel. He used the exact same method the DEA is using today to find the source of the laundering and stop it.

"I know these people. I lived with them undercover as a money launderer in what was then the most powerful drug cartel in the world. I acted as their emissary to senior executives in international banks and businesses that moved their money across the chess board of nations that offer secrecy for blood money-including the United States. During Operation C-Chase, a two-year operation, I laundered $34 million. That's 1/50th of 1 percent of annual drug profits in the U.S.-a snowflake in a blizzard" says Mazur.

The article explains his stance on the subject as a former DEA Agent who implemented this procedure; the same procedure that brought down the World's 7th largest privately held bank, BCCI (Bank of Credit and Commerce International). He also explains why money laundering undercover operations shouldn't be classified in the same breath as the failed "Fast and Furious" action by the Food and Drug Administration.
