Time Warner Cable Names National and People's Choice Winners of Connect a Million Minds' Super Connector Search
NEW YORK - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Time Warner Cable's five-year philanthropic initiative, Connect a
Million Minds (CAMM), today announced the national and People's Choice
winners of its Super Connector Search contest. The contest asked Time
Warner Cable customers to share how they have connected young people in
their communities to the wonders of science, technology, engineering and
math (STEM).
The local Super Connector for Dallas, Cherri Rowe, was chosen as the
national winner of the contest. A panel of expert judges picked Ms.
Rowe's entry among the 21 local finalists across Time Warner Cable
markets. As the national winner, Rowe will receive an additional $10,000
for the Boys & Girls Clubs of Greater Dallas after already receiving
$5,000 for her work with the organization. Rowe will be flown to Los
Angeles, along with a guest, to shoot her own public service
announcement (PSA) that will be featured across Time Warner Cable's
national footprint. In addition, Cherri will receive a year of Time
Warner Cable service.
The local Super Connector for San Diego County, Anna C. Lozar, of
Carlsbad was selected as the People's Choice winner through online
voting. Anna will receive an additional $10,000 for the Carlsbad
Education Foundation (CEF). As one of the 21 local finalists, Anna
received an initial $5,000 grant for her work as CEF's FIRST LEGO League
(FLL) robotics program manager. She also starred in her own PSA that ran
in her local market, which highlighted her role in inspiring young
people to pursue STEM related education through CEF.
"The Super Connector Search has been a great success in communities
across our footprint," said Tessie Topol, Time Warner Cable Senior
Director, Philanthropic Strategy and Community Affairs. "This is a proud
moment for us in recognizing Cherri, Anna and all of the finalists for
their continuous efforts in raising awareness of the importance of STEM
in the lives of young people and our nation."
Time Warner Cable created the Super Connector Search to recognize
customers who help to inspire the next generation of problem solvers. 21
local winners were chosen across Time Warner Cable markets. Each
received a $5,000 grant for a non-profit organization of their choice
that connects kids to science, technology, engineering and math. In
addition, each of the winners starred in their own PSA that ran in their
local market. The contest gave the public an opportunity to participate
by voting for their favorite entry for the People's Choice winner.
Through the Super Connector Search, Time Warner Cable has contributed
$125,000 to afterschool STEM organizations across the country.

About Connect a Million Minds
Time Warner Cable's (TWC) Connect a Million Minds (CAMM) is a five-year,
$100 million philanthropic initiative to address America's declining
proficiency in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), which
puts our children at risk of not competing successfully in a global
economy. Using its media assets, TWC creates awareness of the issue and
inspires students to develop the STEM skills they need to become the
problem solvers of tomorrow. Program highlights include: original PSAs
that challenge public perceptions of STEM; a unique website, www.connectamillionminds.com,
where parents and community members can pledge to connect young people
with the wonders of science; "The Connectory" , a one-of-a-kind online
resource that makes it simple and easy for parents and students to find
informal science and technology learning opportunities in their
communities; grants to support non-profit organizations that bring
stimulating, high-quality and affordable after-school STEM learning to
students; TWC employees, over 47,000 strong, who volunteer their time at
community events like science fairs and robotics competitions, and share
their passion for engineering and technology with students at CAMM
career days. TWC's national CAMM partners are CSAS (Coalition for
Science After School) and FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of
Science and Technology). Local TWC markets are activating CAMM across
the country with community-specific programs and partnerships.
