Citizens of Angola Celebrate Their National Day

The citizens of Angola today celebrated the 36th anniversary of their independence.

Angola has a rich subsoil heritage, from diamonds, oil, gold, copper, as well as a rich wildlife, forest, and fossils. Since independence, oil and diamonds have been the most important economic resource, according to Wikipedia.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Angola.

"During my trip to Angola two years ago, I saw first-hand the extraordinary recovery and economic progress your country has made since the end of the civil war." -Ms. Clinton

Ms. Clinton highlighted that both countries are building on that progress as strategic partners based on mutual respect and interest. She said the U.S. government looks forward to working with the Angolans even more as it strengthens democratic governance, improve the rule of law and promote more opportunities for all Angolans.

"As you celebrate this special day with family and loved ones, know that the United States is a partner and friend. We are committed to this relationship and to a brighter future for all Angolans." -Ms. Clinton

Angola's motto is Virtus Unita Fortior, a Latin phrase meaning "Virtue is stronger when united."
