ALBUQUERQUE, N.M., Nov. 5, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Supported by a patient-safety theme encompassing the spirit of the radiologic technology profession, National Radiologic Technology WeekŪ kicks off Nov. 6.

"One Goal, One Passion: R.T.s Joined in Patient Care" is the theme for this year's NRTW, Nov. 6-12. Selected by the American Society of Radiologic Technologists and a group of practicing R.T.s, it promotes a fundamental principle of the radiologic technology profession: providing quality and safe patient care.

"This year's theme showcases the true spirit of R.T.s," said ASRT President Dawn McNeil, M.S.M., R.T.(R)(M), RDMS, RVT, CRA. "Taking care of our patients and making sure they receive the lowest radiation dose possible during medical imaging and radiation therapy procedures is the primary goal of every R.T."

Established by the ASRT in 1979, NRTW commemorates the discovery of the x-ray by German physicist Willhelm Conrad Roentgen on Nov. 8, 1895. It also honors the vital work of the nation's R.T.s., the medical professionals who perform medical imaging procedures and administer radiation therapy.

To help celebrate NRTW, the ASRT Continuing Education Department offered to review live lecture continuing education activities at no cost if they were presented during the week of Nov. 6-12. More than 50 CE sponsors submitted activities for review.

Also, the ASRT is offering a 50 percent discount on one of its best-selling CE products, a Directed Reading Classic titled "Radiation Protection and Procedures in the OR." The product is available in the ASRT Store and the offer is available to members and nonmembers through Nov. 12.

In addition to ASRT's initiatives, radiology departments across the country will be celebrating NRTW. "It's a long-standing tradition for technologists to educate their health care colleagues and the general public about the radiologic technology profession during NRTW," said Ms. McNeil. "We take pride in the great work R.T.s do every day and we encourage them to promote the profession whenever possible."
