4 More Arrested At Occupy Sacramento Late Wednesday Night
SACRAMENTO - Four (4) more people were arrested here late Wednesday evening at Cesar Chavez Park - there's now been 71 arrests since Occupy Sacramento started Oct. 6.
The Sacramento City Council Tuesday refused to take any action to allow "occupiers" to remain in the park overnight - there have been 13 arrests since then. The first court date is next Oct. 26 in Superior Court for the first 20 arrested Oct. 6.
Tuesday, a crowd of more than 250 inside and outside the jammed council chambers appealed to the council to either pass a resolution, or direct the city manager to allow the rallies to continue all night. Teachers, military veterans, homemakers, students and lawyers were among those who made the pleas, noting that Occupy Sacramento should be treated like other Occupy groups and be granted special permits for city and county parks.
Not only, argue spokespeople for Occupy Sacramento, should people be allowed to remain in the park as part of a continuing demonstration, but the City is wasting valuable resources by spending hundreds of thousands of dollars arresting peaceful, nonviolent demonstrators.
Sacramento Police normally deploy at least 40 police vehicles and 60-70 officers to arrest a handful of people, who offer no resistance even when met by armed riot police. Some sources have placed the cost of more than $100,000 so far - even though all arrests have been peaceful and could be carried out by a handful of officers.
