Univision Los Angeles to Host Third Annual Education Fair "¡Edúcate, Es el momento!"
LOS ANGELES - (BUSINESS WIRE) - As part of Univision's nationwide seven-day education effort "¡Edúcate,
Es el momento!" (Educate yourself...the moment is now!), KMEX Univision
34, TeleFutura KFTR 46 and the stations of Univision Radio Los Angeles
will host the third annual free education fair, "La Feria, Es El
Momento" on Saturday, October 22 from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the
California State University, Dominguez Hills campus.
The "La Feria, Es el momento" education fair will mark the culmination
of Univision's first-ever national education week "¡Edúcate, Es el
momento!" The seven-day call to action efforts (October 16-22, 2011)
features a town hall, special programming at the network and local
levels, local workshops and phone banks and a series of activities to
better equip Hispanic families with tools and information they need to
successfully navigate the education system and the financial process so
they can guide their children to academic success.
"We are thrilled to once again to provide parents with essential
resources that will help steer their children through the U.S. education
system, including post-secondary studies," said Alberto Mier y Terán,
vice president and general manager, Univision Los Angeles. "La Feria, Es
el momento provides our community with the unique opportunity to be
well-informed and essentially empower them to become advocates of their
children's academic success."
The highly anticipated education fair in Los Angeles is the only
citywide Spanish-language education fair in Los Angeles with more than
100 non-profit organizations participating. "La Feria, Es el momento,"
the city's largest one-day education effort, aims to empower, inspire
and inform parents with essential information to lead their children to
academic success.
The education fair, one of the largest one-day book giveaways, will be
distributing more than 35,000 books to every child in attendance,
donated by The Molina Foundation, Mexican Consulate, First 5 LA, COFEM
and Jumpstart. The fair will have over 100 exhibits with
education-related information and resources from the participating
non-profit organizations; and will provide entertainment including a
stage and activities for all ages. Furthermore, attendees will have the
opportunity to take part in the educational workshops offered at the
fair presented by COFEM in collaboration with the Los Angeles Area
Chamber of Commerce. Seminars include:
-
Planning for College
-
Financial Aid Opportunities for AB-540 Students
-
Money Saving Options for College
-
How to Prepare for the FAFSA
Local Univision anchors and reporters Teresa Quevedo, Felicidad
Aveleyra, Francisco Pinto, Gabriela Teissier and Francisco Ugalde will
be taking part in the fair's activities. Alongside them will be
Univision Radio personalities Argelia Atilano, Omar Velasco, Carlos
Alvarez and Stephanie Himonedes "La Chiquibaby." In addition, Univision
Network news anchors Jorge Ramos and Maria Elena Salinas will take part
in a special workshop. In addition to serving in the opening ceremony,
local dignitaries will take part in the Reading Room where they will
read their favorite childhood book to children.
Milka Duno, the first Venezuelan woman to start a career in professional
motorsports at an international level will help facilitate a workshop
taking place in the CSUDH theatre. Duno is the first Latina to race at
the Indianapolis 500 and also the first Latina to lead an IndyCar Series
race.
The fair will have a "career pathway," a mentor area where students can
speak and interact with local professionals and get advice on how they
achieved their professional goals. In addition, there will be a special
"visualization" area where students can dress up in attire to help them
visualize themselves as what they aspire to be, such as a doctor, a
judge or a fireman.
An outdoor activity field will be set up with over 20 participating
sponsors including: Metro PCS, State Farm, McDonalds, Buick, Chivas USA,
LA Kings, LA Galaxy, Natural History Museum and Long Beach Aquarium of
the Pacific.
This year's highly anticipated education event is made possible by a
collaboration between Univision Los Angeles and numerous organizations
in the education community, including the California State University
system, CSU Dominguez Hills, CommuniCard LLC, Los Angeles Area Chamber
of Commerce, Preschool California, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater
Los Angeles, Jumpstart, PIQE, LAUSD and COFEM.
