D3D Cinema to Present Giant Screen 4K 3D Laser Projection Demo at 2nd Annual Moody Digital Cinema Symposium

EVANSTON, Ill. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Museum cinema integration pioneer D3D Cinema has teamed with Moody Gardens and Barco to host an unprecedented and exclusive preview of next-generation digital projection technology, providing a glimpse into the future of the movie going experience. The event will take place January 9-10, 2012 at the 2nd Annual Moody Gardens Digital Cinema Symposium in Galveston, TX on the 80-foot MG3D Theater screen.

The event will score a series of noteworthy milestones in the digital cinema revolution, including:

  • The FIRST demonstration of Barco's revolutionary laser light engine on a giant screen
  • The FIRST demonstration of true DLP 4K resolution 3D on a giant screen
  • The FIRST 4K 3D comparison of 'ultra-reality' 48 frame/sec & 60 frame/sec content
  • The FIRST giant 3D 500 mbps comparison, nearly double the current cinema bit rate standard

While each technical "first" is significant in and of itself, the combination sums to a truly historical exhibition. Of particular import is the demonstration of Barco's laser light engine, which is anticipated by industry officials to surpass the current Guinness World Record for brightness held by Barco. With unparalleled light levels, enhanced contrast and superior color depth, attendees will be the first to get a preview of what the next generation giant screen experience promises to be. In an industry where light level is king, especially critical for 4:3 3D giant screens, a laser light source is a major advance with momentous ramifications.

"Barco and our technology partners continue to raise the bar and redefine the forefront of cinema technology innovation," said Don Kempf, President of D3D. "We are confident that this event will demonstrate to the museum and giant screen communities that the future of experiential digital 3D cinema is now. Last year's first Moody Digital Symposium was a truly groundbreaking event, enabling our industry to move past talk and theory for the first time. This year we intend to further the digital 3D revolution with another provocative display."

Art Mercurio, VP of Technology at D3D Cinema, adds: "As a 3D system integrator, we're particularly excited about the light levels that lasers can achieve. As they do with all of their technology, Barco has approached the laser lamp house design to be fully modular so that all of their current 4K projectors may be upgraded simply and easily. And no more xenon lamp costs!"

"We're fully committed to providing the highest quality solutions for giant screen theaters," said Todd Hoddick, VP of Barco's entertainment division in North America. "D3D is helping to guide this industry in an electrifying direction and we're pleased to be helping them lead the way."

D3D, Moody Gardens and Barco partnered for the first Digital Cinema Symposium in January 2011 where the first split screen, "butterflied" shootout between a 15 perf 70mm film projector and a Barco DP4K-32B digital projector was conducted. Giant screen veterans in attendance overwhelmingly favored the Barco digital projector, representing a significant leap forward for the cinema industry.

John Zendt, President and CEO of Moody Gardens: "2011 was about changing perceptions, testing longstanding conjectures about film vs. digital. At the 2012 event, we start from a more enlightened place - the conversation and technology showcase can really move into uncharted territory. There is no doubt that audiences will leave the room with an appreciation for where cinema is headed. Museum executives are going to face tough questions about the value proposition of traditional giant cinema brands."

Registration for the 2012 Moody Digital Cinema Symposium begins in October. Sessions, screenings and speakers to be announced.
