The citizens of Malaysia today celebrated their 54 years of independence.

Malaysia is relatively open state-oriented and newly industrialised market economy. The country has one of the best economic records in Asia and the 3rd largest economy in ASEAN and 29th largest economy in the world, according to Wikipedia.

US Secretary of State, Hillary Rodham Clinton, speaking in Washington, DC, extended the congratulations of President Obama and the people of the United States, to the people of Malaysia on their National Day.

"When I visited Malaysia last November, I met with young people, entrepreneurs, political leaders and representatives of civil society, whose eagerness to engage with Americans will foster even greater collaboration and understanding between our countries in the years to come." -Ms. Clinton

She highlighted that as Malaysia continues to strive toward becoming a high income economy by 2020, the United States looks forward to expanding U.S.-Malaysia relations to bring greater prosperity to their countries.

"As you celebrate this special day with family, friends and loved ones, know that the United States stands with you as a committed partner and friend. I wish all Malaysians around the world a Happy Merdeka Day." -Ms. Clinton

Malaysia has never recognised Israel. It has no diplomatic ties with it. It has remained a strong supporter of the State of Palestine, and called for Israel to be taken to the International Criminal Court over the Gaza flotilla raid. The Malaysian peacekeeping forces are present in Lebanon. The country has contributed to many other UN peacekeeping missions as well.
