ATR Urges Kate Marshall to Apologize for Lies About Taxpayer Protection Pledge

Marshall seeks to distract from Mark Amodei's principled opposition to tax increases

WASHINGTON, Aug. 23, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today Americans for Tax Reform (ATR) called on Kate Marshall, candidate for Congress in Nevada's 2nd District, to apologize for recent false statements about candidate Mark Amodei and the Taxpayer Protection Pledge. Marshall's desperate attacks are similar to those of former Nevada Congresswoman Dina Titus, whose claims about the Pledge were deemed "blatantly false" by the nonpartisan FactCheck.org.

Marshall simply seeks to distract from Amodei's principled opposition to tax increases. Meanwhile, she refuses to make the same commitment to the voters of the 2nd District.

During a debate taped Monday and airing tonight, Marshall is reported to have made claims similar to falsehoods she put forth during the August 17 debate, when she said: "(Amodei) signed a tax pledge which basically says no tax loopholes shall be left behind. The tax pledge says he shall never, he vows, turn down a subsidy. He shall never close a loophole."

As FactCheck.org has noted:

[The Pledge] leaves ample room for elimination of any number of special tax breaks so long as the overall level of taxation is not increased. To claim that this "protects" any particular provision of the tax code is simply untrue.

ATR has offered the Pledge to all candidates for federal office since 1987. To date, 41 U.S. Senators and 235 members of the U.S. House of Representatives have signed the Pledge. Additionally, thirteen governors and over 1,200 state legislators have signed the Pledge.

Americans for Tax Reform is a non-partisan coalition of taxpayers and taxpayer groups who oppose all tax increases. For more information or to arrange an interview please contact John Kartch at (202) 785-0266 or by email at jkartch@atr.org.
