The story is told with much dry humor, by a retired mailman, Bruce Delreno, who spends a lot of time at the golf course. His dog happens to find a body nearby, which leads to his involvement in that and other murders.

Bruce becomes obsessed with finding the killers, since his Indian friend seems somehow to be involved.

Willowtree is a fictitious town in Arizona, home to a great golf course, and a police force that Bruce thinks is moving too slowly. He believes a group of long time friends, suspected of harboring dark secrets, hold the key to solving the crimes.
