Israel Approves More Settlements in East Jerusalem

Secretary-General Ban Ki-Moon today voiced his deep disappointment at the recent approval by the Israeli Government of plans for more than 900 housing units in East Jerusalem.

"He reiterates that settlement activity in the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, is contrary to international law, and he is concerned by provocative actions on the ground." - Mr. Ban's spokesperson

It was Israel's refusal last September to extend a 10-month freeze on settlement activity in the occupied Palestinian territory that prompted the Palestinians to withdraw from direct talks with the Israelis.

Despite repeated calls by the international community to resume negotiations, the peace process has been in a deadlock since then.

"The Secretary-General supports ongoing efforts to find a way to resume peace talks, and underlines that creating an environment that is conducive to progress is vital." -Ban's Spokesperson
