HOHENFELS, GERMANY - Indiana National Guard's 81st Troop Command Commander, Brig. Gen. Corey Carr, visited Soldiers of the 1313th and 1413th Engineer Companies working in Hohenfels, Germany on 2nd-3rd of August.

The commander had been promoted to first lieutenant at the base in Hohenfels in the 1980's after returning from a training mission, working as an armor platoon leader and scout platoon leader.

"It's been fun," Carr said, about coming back. "It's changed a little bit."

The Soviet Union is no more. The Cold War is long over. The army installation is now called the Joint Multinational Readiness Center (JMRC), and it prepares Soldiers for different operational contingencies than it once did.

Carr spent two days with Soldiers and said the trip to Hohenfels was quick but substantive.

At each of the four work sites, Carr remained as long as possible, getting a full report from the NCO's in charge. He also participated in training on various kinds of equipment and passed out coins for exemplary performance.

Carr said the trip was a great opportunity to see Soldiers enjoying themselves while doing good work, "This is tremendous."

Carr said when he was a lieutenant at Hohenfels he had no clue that he would someday return as a general.

"Being a lieutenant in Germany was fun. It was a lot of fun. Never gave it a second thought," Carr said and added that the "real reward" was seeing the work being done by the Soldiers.
