Extend Health Q2 2011 Medicare Confidence Survey: Even As Congressional Debates On Spending Point To Cuts, 57% of Seniors Surveyed Remain "Confident" in Medicare

SAN MATEO, Calif. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - A survey of 385 seniors 65 and older covered by Medicare showed that 57%1 of respondents remain confident that Medicare will be there for the rest of their lives. This level of confidence has remained steady since Extend Health began conducting Medicare Confidence surveys in December 20092. Moreover, it has been unaffected by the most recent Congressional debates over the national debt ceiling and spending that indicate cuts to Medicare almost certainly will be part of any long-term budget agreement.

The current survey was fielded from July 22-27, 2011 by Extend Health, Inc., which operates the nation's largest private Medicare exchange. Extend Health surveys seniors 65 and older about their confidence in Medicare every quarter and publishes an annual Medicare Confidence Pulse Report.

The questions and detailed results from the most recent and the past two surveys are as follows:

How confident are you that Medicare will be available for the rest of your life?

July 2011 April 2011 December 2010
Very confident 15.0 % 16.7 % 18.7 %
Somewhat confident 41.7 % 42.9 % 39.9 %
Unsure 29.9 % 29.7 % 31.4 %
Not confident 13.4 % 10.8 % 10.0 %

How confident are you that Medicare will be available for the rest of your children's lives?

July 2011 April 2011 December 2010
