Tennessee Small Businesswoman & Women Impacting Public Policy to Discuss E-Fairness & Tennessee Sales Tax Holiday

NASHVILLE, Tenn., Aug. 4, 2011 /PRNewswire/ -- Tomorrow, Friday, August 5 at 11:00 a.m. Central Time, Nashville based small business owner Maggie Jetter and Barbara Kasoff, president of Women Impacting Public Policy (WIPP) will discuss the need for policymakers to close the tax loophole that allows online-only retailers to avoid collecting local sales tax from consumers when purchases are made online.

The conference call comes as Tennessee residents prepare to take advantage of the state's sixth annual sales tax holiday. This weekend's sales tax holiday allows back-to-school shoppers to save nearly 10 percent on clothing, school supplies and computers.

Organizers of the call believe the tax holiday will demonstrate that consumers are more inclined to support local small businesses that give back to their communities and help employ local residents when given the opportunity to purchase goods on a level playing field, where online-only retailers and bricks-and-mortar retailers compete under the same rules.

Prior to leaving office, former Tennessee Governor Phil Bredesen made a deal with Internet giant Amazon.com, promising them exemption from collecting sales tax in Tennessee. Since then, Governor Bill Haslam has indicated a willingness to work with other states to support a national solution to this growing problem, which according to a 2009 University of Tennessee study will cost the state $400 million in lost revenue next year.
