Great American Aerial Adventures Announces Four-Day, Coast-to-Coast Air Caravan September 17-20, 2011
DENVER - (BUSINESS WIRE) - A century ago, great adventurer Calbraith Perry Rodgers accepted William
Randolph Hearst's $50,000 challenge to be the first pilot to fly across
the country in less than 30 days. While he didn't win the prize, his
49-day flight from Sheepshead Bay, NY to Pasadena, CA ignited the
country's passion for flight and fueled the dreams of fellow
adventurers. On September 17, 2011, exactly 100 years later, a group of
like-minded pilots will create a spectacle in the skies as they caravan
across the country. This first Great American Aerial Adventure, The
Rodgers Cup, will depart from Kitty Hawk, NC and land four days later in
Long Beach, CA. Along the way, they will explore the countryside, camp
under their wings, enjoy local gourmet fare and live Americana music -
and participate in nightly Campfire Sessions featuring expert lectures
on aviation, geography, history and local interest points.
The Rodgers Cup is open to the first 200 plane entries received from
valid pilots flying a registered airplane. The event is not a race, but
a tour designed for enjoyment, camaraderie and learning. The average
daily flight time will be four-to-five hours at an average pace of 125
knots - a pace and speed slow and low enough to allow entrants to truly
enjoy the country's great landscapes.
Registration of $750/adult and $350/child under 12 includes all meals,
events, entertainment, Campfire Sessions and camping fees. Registration
is available at greatamericanaerialadventures.com.
