PLAYA DEL CARMEN, Quintana Roo, México - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Mahekal Beach Resort, one of the few remaining beachfront palapas style resorts in Mexico, is excited to announce the third laying of Loggerhead sea turtle eggs on its beach in less than two years. Last summer guests at the resort witnessed and participated in the release of more than 200 baby turtles, and on June 30th of this year another turtle came to the resort to lay her eggs at Mahekal's beach. Several guests had the unique opportunity to see her arrival, watch her dig her nest, lay more than 100 eggs, and then depart into the Caribbean Sea.

"It was an amazing experience to live," said Debbie Barley, one of the guests that witnessed the event. "I feel blessed to have had the opportunity to witness one of the many magical gifts that life has to offer. I was there [Mahekal Beach Resort] with my daughter...it was something special we shared and we will have those memories forever."

Loggerhead turtles weigh between 200 - 500 lbs and grow to almost 4 feet in length. Nesting season on the Coast of Quintana Roo is May through October during which females will lay approximately 120 round, white, eggs per nest. The eggs hatch in about 60 days. To increase the chances of survival, Mahekal Beach Resort and local authorities participate in a protection program so the eggs are not lost to natural predators. A "corral" surrounds the nest for protection during the incubation period.

"The eggs are expected to hatch between the fourth week of August and the first week of September," said Emilio Palazuelos, general manager at Mahekal Beach Resort. "Travelers interested in witnessing and participating in this once in a lifetime experience are encouraged plan a trip to the resort during that time. There will be much celebration surrounding this occasion and we will be inviting our guests to name and personally release each baby sea turtle into the Caribbean Sea."

Resembling a Mayan village, Mahekal Beach Resort is a unique palapas style resort nestled between lush tropical gardens, an 800-foot pristine white sand beach and the turquoise water of the Caribbean Sea. Under new ownership and management since 2008, the resort boasts an array of updates and aesthetic enhancements and now offers a "Deluxe" room option for the ultimate vacation experience.

"The physical and service oriented improvements we've made to the resort truly add to the tranquil and serene setting we have," said Palazuelos. "We've revitalized the property while holding true to the soul of our very special resort that is so rich in history and memories."

The lobby has been remodeled featuring a new floor using indigenous materials and new wooden furnishings. The landscaping has been improved with new walkways and fencing, and the pond in the Pueblito section is now a beautiful clear water fountain. Additionally, a new deck has been installed in front of the Aventura pool so the guests can enjoy breakfast or lunch by the Caribbean Sea.

Renovations also include updates to the guestrooms where beautiful native hard wood patio furniture has been added and new bureau lamps and safety deposit boxes have been installed. A new Pastry Chef has been added into the resort's food and beverage department so guests may savor exquisite creations at breakfast, lunch and dinner.

In addition to these improvements, Mahekal Beach Resort is launching its new "Deluxe" room category. Four rooms have been completely remodeled; one Ocean Front Casita, one Penthouse and two Ocean View Rooms. All rooms feature natural materials of the region and superb high end finishes that evoke the serenity of nature.

The Resort has also created a new Spa featuring two luxurious treatment rooms, complete with high-end finishes. Massages and treatments are done by experienced masseuses using exquisite organic products.
