War Crimes Suspect Turns Himself in to CBSA

The Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA) apprehended the sixth individual identified on the Wanted by the CBSA Web page yesterday. Cesar Amilcar Chavarria Padilla, originally from Guatemala turned himself in at the Greater Toronto Enforcement Centre on the morning of August 2. He is currently in CBSA custody.

This update follows the announcement on July 21, 2011, by Ministers Toews and Kenney urging Canadians to help identify 30 individuals suspected of being complicit in war crimes or crimes against humanity, and who are thought to be hiding in locations across Canada.

"The very fact that this individual chose to surrender himself into CBSA custody illustrates how effective this approach has been," said Minister Toews. "These suspected war criminals are feeling the pressure of having their names and faces known to Canadians."

The CBSA has apprehended five other individuals as a result of this initiative, and two have since been removed from Canada.

The Government of Canada is grateful for the assistance the public is providing and asks that they continue to look at the CBSA Web site for updates. Members of the public are reminded that they should not take action to apprehend the individuals listed on the Web site. Any information on the whereabouts of these wanted individuals should be reported to the CBSA Border Watch Line at 1-888-502-9060.
