Summers in Florida are second to none. While residents enjoy the outdoors and take pleasure in barbeques, bicycle rides, festivals and beaches, they can be placing themselves in harms way. Female Florida mosquitoes are extra hungry this time of year since they require a blood meal in order to lay eggs.

The real danger has to do with the diseases transmitted by Florida mosquitoes. Last year there was a terrible dengue outbreak that infected at least 1,000 people in Florida. Some of the other possible transmissions are yellow fever and malaria; other painful and potentially deadly diseases.

"The best advice," explains Suncoast Pest Control President Thomas Harris, "is to avoid being outside during high activity hours for Florida mosquitoes, generally around sunset and after rainstorms." Another way to lower your risk of getting bitten by mosquitoes is to eliminate standing water. "Something as innocent as a child's toy bucket can potentially harbor thousands of Florida mosquitoes, releasing them on the unsuspecting surrounding area," explains Harris.
