Xavier Continues to Overcome Hurricane Katrina With the Help of Jani-King New Orleans

Looming just around the corner is the 6th anniversary of Hurricane Katrina and the flooding that devastated New Orleans. And while Xavier University was not spared from the storm, it's difficult to find any evidence today that that campus was once completely flooded and its students displaced.

When the waters receded in September of 2005, what was just days before a thriving and extraordinary University full of students, suddenly looked like a ghost town. Students, faculty and staff were forced to evacuate and even abandon the campus. Vendors and partners of the university were also left without a valuable business partnership. Yet, one particular vendor who had been a partner with the University for more than a decade stayed and pledged to help the University recover.

In June 2011, representatives from Jani-King International, the highly-respected commercial cleaning company, presented Xavier University with the final payment of a $100,000 donation that contributed to the University recovering from the destruction of Hurricane Katrina.

Instead of abandoning their partner in a time of need, Jani-King flew in commercial cleaning supplies, provided housing for their franchisees, and shoveled thick mud out of every corner inside the buildings. Jani-King New Orleans went above and beyond their regular commercial cleaning services by making a financial promise to see that students returned and the University thrived once again.

"I would personally like to acknowledge Gulf Coast Master Franchise Owner Tom Enmon and New Orleans Unit Franchise Owner Randall Hithe for exceeding Jani-King's already high standards in providing services and support to Xavier University. We are proud to stand beside them with this contribution," said Jerry Crawford, President of Jani-King International.

Jani-King New Orleans is in its 17th year partnering with Xavier University, serving the entire Xavier campus with professional commercial cleaning services. "We have grown with them over the years and watched them more than double in size," explains Tom Enmon. "We were a major part in the reopening of Xavier University. We spent many months following the devastation in opening the school. We had one franchise owner that moved near the campus to help with the opening."

Thanks to the determination of the students, faculty, staff, community, and commercial cleaning organizations like Jani-King Franchises, Xavier University reopened after just five months and was the first school in the area to reopen. The campus underwent a massive cleanup and reconstruction, allowing Xavier University to welcome nearly 80 percent of its students back to campus in January 2006.

Jani-King New Orleans is involved with other community events in the New Orleans area including, The First Tee organization, whose mission is "to impact the lives of young people by providing educational programs that build character, instill life-enhancing values and promote healthy choices through the game of golf."
