Hubbell Lighting's Beacon Products Brand Re-Lights Carmel, Indiana Streetscape
GREENVILLE, S.C. - (BUSINESS WIRE) - Beacon Products (www.beaconproducts.com),
a division of Hubbell Lighting (www.hubbelllighting.com),
a market leader in innovative lighting technology, design, and
manufacturing for over 120 years, has recently completed a light
emitting diode (LED) outdoor lighting fixture retrofit project for the City
of Carmel, Indiana, an upscale community just north of Indianapolis.

Like many communities throughout the Unites States, the city fathers in
Carmel, searching for ways to save energy and money, and in the process
become "greener," turned to Bradenton, FL based Beacon Products
for guidance and ultimately the installation of its LED Retrofit Kit
with Direct V Optics in all 800 of its downtown decorative post top
lighting fixtures. (http://www.beaconproducts.com/products_view.html?PID=501)
Prior to retrofitting the lighting, Beacon Products personnel conducted
a thorough economic study comparing the costs of new fixture replacement
versus the retrofitting of existing fixtures. After evaluating the
options, including a test installation, it was determined that employing
Beacon Products LED retrofit kits would not only save the city an
estimated 48% in energy costs, it would also significantly cut down on
greenhouse emissions, save on maintenance, and, just as importantly,
provide the city with the fastest payback schedule.
Based on these findings, a 90 Watt LED retrofit kit, from the company
who was the first domestic manufacturer to introduce a full line of
municipal-grade outdoor LED luminaries in 2008, was selected to replace
the metal halide and high pressure sodium (HPS) light sources the city
previously employed.
According to David Huffman, Director of Public Works, "The city of
Carmel has gained many benefits from this (lighting) conversion
including reduced stock requirements (8 SKUs have been eliminated) and,
with LEDs that last 50,000 hours, dramatically reduced maintenance
requirements."
The lighting project, made possible through The Energy Efficiency and
Conservation Block Grant (EECBG) program of the Department of Energy,
will also have a positive effect on greenhouse emissions with the
expectation of saving some 600,000+ pounds of carbon dioxide annually,
which is equivalent to taking nearly 100 passenger cars off the road and
the recycling of 144 tons of waste instead of land filled.
Summing up all of the promise and positives of their new LED luminaries,
(installed in June) represent, Melanie Letz in Carmel's Department of
Community Relations said, "The LED lights provide improved directional
illumination for (our) pedestrians, motorists, and downtown business.
The LED retrofit kit lighting fixture application provided by Beacon
Products has indeed been a win-win-win for the community of Carmel,
Indiana, for its treasury, and for the environment."
