Bosnia and Herzegovina President Komšić to Serve as Official Patron of 4th Annual JDC-Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure in Sarajevo
SARAJEVO, Bosnia-Herzegovina - (BUSINESS WIRE) - In a powerful show of support for the fourth annual Bosnia and
Herzegovina Race for the Cure - organized by the American Jewish Joint
Distribution Committee's Women's Health Empowerment Program (WHEP) and
Susan G. Komen for the Cure - President H.E. Željko KomÅ¡iÄ announced his
patronage of the September 24 event. In addition, Danuta Moon, wife of
the U.S. Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina Patrick Moon, will serve
as Chair of the Race, joining thousands of the country's Muslims, Jews,
Serbs and Croats who will come together on the streets of Sarajevo.
"We are honored to have the support of President KomÅ¡iÄ and Ms. Moon, as
well as the many women, men and children across the country who will
join us for this year's race, which makes a bold statement about how far
we've come and how important the breast cancer cause is to the people of
Bosnia and Herzegovina," said Ambassador Nancy G. Brinker, founder and
chief executive officer of Susan G. Komen for the Cure.
"It's a glowing testament to the success of our efforts to fight breast
cancer in Bosnia and Herzegovina that President KomÅ¡iÄ and Ms. Moon have
lent their welcome support to this powerful annual event," said JDC CEO
Steven Schwager. "As in past years, JDC and Susan G. Komen for the Cure
will ensure that this year's Race is a showcase for hope and triumph in
the face of a global killer."
The annual Race for the Cure, which is part of Susan G. Komen's Global
Race for the Cure series, provides breast cancer survivors and
supporters a powerful way to unite behind the cause of increasing
awareness of breast cancer and improving early detection of the disease.
Breast cancer is the most frequently diagnosed cancer in women and the
leading cause of death among women worldwide. Every 69 seconds,
somewhere in the world, someone dies from breast cancer. The event also
provides participants the chance to make a difference for local women
because all funds raised will remain in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
WHEP, a JDC-Komen partnership program, is an innovative overseas public
movement that encourages the early detection of breast cancer.
The Race for the Cure Series, Komen's signature event, is the world's
largest and most successful education and fundraising event for breast
cancer. More than 1.6 million participate in the Race Series annually.

will solely go to support the Race.
