PHILADELPHIA, Aug. 1, 2011 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Physicians seeking a comprehensive reference book on the most current techniques in pediatric surgery have a new resource available -- Fundamentals of Pediatric Surgery, edited by Peter Mattei, M.D., an attending general pediatric surgeon at The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia.

The 921-page textbook was published in Spring, 2011 by Springer Science+Business Media, based in New York.

"This textbook is aimed at practicing surgeons--both surgeons specializing in pediatric surgery and general surgeons who want current information on the specific needs and special considerations surrounding surgical care of children," said Mattei. "We also offer a comprehensive, practical guide for surgical residents as they serve their rotation in pediatric surgery, and for surgical residents who choose a fellowship in pediatric surgery. Each chapter presents up-to-date, pertinent information, written by an experienced surgeon or clinician, on day-to-day care of children needing surgical care."

The textbook contains 114 chapters, divided into 15 sections that cover discrete anatomical areas, as well as sections on perioperative care, trauma, critical care, pediatric surgical oncology and organ transplantation. Additional chapters address other specialized issues, such as fetal surgery, conjoined twins, and ventricular shunts for hydrocephalus.

More than 140 contributors from dozens of children's hospitals and other institutions contributed chapters to the textbook. Each chapter provides a concise overview of its topic, accompanied with photos and diagrams, highlighted tables of summary points, technical points, a list of studies and a "parental preparation" summary of information to present to the patient's family members. A concluding "editor's comment" offers additional analysis and perspective on the topic at hand.
